Corruption has infected sports:
FIFA President Gianni Infantino is facing the prospect of resigning over a controversial plan to sell commercial rights to the World Cup, a harsh reaction from UEFA, and questions about his political ties. The scandal: Privatization plan: In late July 2026, Infantino proposed creating a $20 billion Fifa Forward Enterprise to manage the World Cup with private investors. Political ties: The main investor was said to be Thrive Eternal, a company linked to Joshua Kushner (brother of Jared Kushner, son-in-law of US President Donald Trump), sparking accusations of political toxicity and collusion. UEFA's reaction: The Union of European Football Associations demanded that all documents on the deal be preserved and threatened legal action, while European federations began withdrawing letters of support for Infantino's re-election. Rejection of the plan: Under intense pressure and criticism, Infantino was forced to abandon the controversial proposal, but pressure from the football world and calls for his resignation continue to grow. For a breakdown of why this controversy has put the FIFA presidency under intense scrutiny:

Have Liverpool left themselves short at the back?
Sky Sports News' Vinny OConnor: They haven't got their first-choice centre-back partnership out there at the moment. Virgil van Dijk is effectively the only senior centre-half that Liverpool have at their disposal. Jacquet's season was cut short through injury with Rennes in the last campaign with that shoulder problem that he had and he had surgery on that and seemed to have started pre-season pretty well and Iraola was really happy with how he was progressing. But then he felt a bit of discomfort, so Liverpool are being cautious with him and there's that injury to Joe Gomez. Leoni is still coming back from an ACL as well. So Liverpool don't have their first-choice centre-halves, but I think that's where the concern is for fans at the moment and it is that squad depth, the options that they have at centre-half because we know what Gomez's injury record is like for instance. And Liverpool don't have the more experienced back-up to come in if Gomez isn't available. So there's a lot going on at Liverpool and certainly I think the concern among the fans, they won't necessarily read too much into a pre-season friendly, but at the same time they will look at that squad depth and ask is it really enough coming into the new season?

What's the latest on Liverpool's move for Barcola?
Sky Sports News' Mark McAdam speaking on The Transfer Show: “There has still been no club-to-club contact between PSG and Liverpool at this stage over Bradley Barcola. “He is a player Liverpool very much admire, but there’s no point slinging in an offer if they don’t believe that they’re close to getting a deal done. “If PSG want £145m, then what’s the point of putting in an offer for £100m? It’s going to get rejected, isn’t it? “Therefore, they have to have some sensible conversations where they can get it down a bit from £145m because they’re never going to pay that. “We know Bradley Barcola doesn’t really see a future at PSG and he’s open to a potential move, and Liverpool would be a brilliant destination for him.”
